Nhà đấu giá Phillips ở Geneva, Thụy Sĩ cùng với Bacs & Russo, nhà đấu giá hàng đầu thế giới chuyên về đồng hồ, hôm Chủ Nhật 14/05/2017 loan báo chiếc đồng hồ Rolex của Hoàng Đế Bảo Đại đã lập kỷ lục thế giới về giá cao nhất từng bán được trong một cuộc đấu giá đồng hồ Rolex.

Chiếc đồng hồ mang tên vị vua cuối cùng của vương triều nhà Nguyễn ở Việt Nam bán được giá 5,060,427 Mỹ kim, hơn gấp đôi mức giá được giới sưu tầm dự liệu. Trang mạng của tạp chí Forbes cho hay, cuộc đấu giá chỉ diễn ra trong 8 phút, giữa 10 người tham dự, trong phòng tại khách sạn Hotel La Reserve ở Geneva, và 3 người tham dự khác qua điện thoại.

Chiếc đồng hồ được các chuyên gia và nhà sưu tầm xem như là một hiện vật huyền thoại, và có lẽ là chiếc đồng hồ Rolex đắt giá nhất trên thị trường. Hãng Rolex chỉ tạo ra ba chiếc đồng hồ cùng kiểu bằng vàng 18 karat có mặt đen. Nhưng trong ba chiếc đồng hồ, đây là chiếc duy nhất có đính kim cương ở những giờ chẵn. Vua Bảo Đại đã tự mình sắm chiếc đồng hồ này ở Thụy Sĩ vào năm 1954, khi ông tham dự hội nghị Geneva lịch sử nhằm tìm kiếm hòa bình ở bán đảo Đông Dương.

Vua Bảo Đại lên ngôi năm 1926 khi mới 12 tuổi. Năm 1955 ông bị truất phế trong một cuộc trưng cầu dân ý và phải rời khỏi Việt Nam đi lưu vong. Ông qua đời ở Pháp năm 1997, thọ 83 tuổi.

Bao Dai Rolex Sells For More Than $5 Million At Phillips Auction, Setting A New World Record


With the auction still going on in Geneva, Phillips in Association with Bacs & Russo, leading watch auction house, announces that it has set a new world record for the highest price ever achieved at auction for a Rolex wristwatch.  The watch that sold for $5,060,427 is a legendary timepiece,  Reference 6062: "Bao Dai."  The watch belonged to His Majesty Bao Dai, the last emperor of Vietnam.

In 1954, Bao Dai, the last emperor of Vietnam, was in Geneva for peace talks when he excused himself to do a little watch shopping. The "Keeper of Greatness" selected a timepiece that lived up to his name—the most complicated Rolex made, a 6062 Oyster with a triple calendar and a moon phase. The most expensive watch for sale at the time—it cost more than $900, or $8,300 today—the Rolex was one of three that came with a black dial and diamond markers. (The other two feature six diamonds on odd numbers, but Bao Dai's has five diamonds on even numbers, which meant the Rolex crown logo had to be shifted down.)

Phillips auction house in association with Bacs & Russo will offer no fewer than seven rare Rolex watches at its next auction in Geneva, to be held May 13 and 14 at the Hôtel La Réserve (Paris).

The sale is led by the iconic Rolex Reference 6062, “Bao Dai,” which the auction house says is among the “most valuable and desirable Rolexes” and the “most complicated and iconic Oyster-cased model” ever made by the Swiss watch manufacturer. In addition to its rarity, this particular model also has imperial provenance. It has a pre-sale estimate of more than $1.5 million.
This Rolex triple calendar with moonphase in yellow gold is one of three black dial models known to exist with diamond markers, the auction house said in a statement. Of the three, the Bao Dai, is the only one to feature diamond markers at the even hours.

The watch’s value is further enhanced by its provenance, having belonged to Bảo Đại, the last emperor of Vietnam. According to family legend, Đại (the 13th and last emperor of the Nguyễn Dynasty) purchased the watch in Geneva in 1954, while he attended a conference seeking peace in Indochina.

The Bao Dai was first sold at Phillips in 2002 for what was at the time the most expensive Rolex ever acquired at auction, according to the auction house. A private collector was winning bidder and it had stayed in private hands since.

Aurel Bacs, senior consultant at Phillips, sold the watch at that time.

“It is an absolute privilege to offer the Rolex 6062 ‘Bao Dai’ for the second time in my career,” Bacs said. “With its incredible imperial provenance, stunning condition, and exceptional rarity, it’s a mythical watch that occupies the dreams of scholars, collectors, and enthusiasts all over the world.”

The Bao Dai Rolex has a very conservative presale estimate of $1.5 million.
